And today, after nearly 6 months, the purchase has come full circle. Sony took to their social media handles to announce that they have finally closed their buyout deal with Bungie, officially welcoming the studio into the PlayStation family.
— PlayStation (@PlayStation) July 15, 2022 For those of you who don’t know what that means; essentially, Sony and Bungie have finalized all aspects of the purchase, ending any talks or investigations by regulatory bodies. Now, all that remains is the implementation of the merger. Since Sony plans to keep Bungie separate and grant it full autonomy to keep serving the gaming market at large, I can’t expect this stage to take that long. Currently, Sony and Bungie haven’t announced any new plans or games in development, though it would be foolish to assume something isn’t already cooking. Destiny 2 is Bungie’s priority now as it looks to release the final promised DLCs. With Sony’s glooming shadow, a potential Destiny 3 isn’t far off, but a more reasonable guess would be of a completely new IP. Bungie has confirmed that they’re working on a brand new game, unrelated to Destiny or Halo, and rumors of a mobile Destiny have also been floating around. Whether exciting news is right around the corner, or a few years away, remains to be seen.
